The five Tudor rulers and how each was succeeded.

1. Henry VII

   Henry VII, the first Tudor king, wanted England to be peaceful and his throne secure. He strengthened central administration and built up the monarchy's financial reserves.

2. Henry VIII

   ▸

   His son Henry VIII continued centralising power and is most famous for breaking away from the Church of Rome and marrying six times.

3. Edward VI

   ▸

   Henry VIII was succeeded by his son Edward VI, who was strongly Protestant. He died at the age of 15 after ruling just over six years.

4. Mary I

   ▸

   Edward's half-sister Mary became queen. A devout Catholic, she persecuted Protestants and so became known as Bloody Mary. She also died after a short reign.

5. Elizabeth I

   ▸

   Mary's half-sister Elizabeth, daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, became queen. She was a Protestant and one of the most popular monarchs in English history.
