   The Anglo-Saxons were not Christians at first, but missionaries came to preach. St Augustine led missionaries from Rome and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury.

   During the Reformation in the 1530s, Henry VIII broke with Rome and established the Church of England, a Protestant Church.

   The Church of England is the official, established Church of the state in England. The monarch is its head and the Archbishop of Canterbury its spiritual leader.

   The national Church of Scotland is a Presbyterian Church governed by ministers and elders. Its General Assembly is chaired by the Moderator.

   There is no established Church in Wales or Northern Ireland. Other Christian groups in the UK include Baptists, Methodists, Quakers and Roman Catholics.
